Where to Stay (Before It’s Fully Booked)

1. Free Ice Skating at Robson Square

Lace up those skates and hit the ice at Robson Square Ice Rink. This is our personal favourite of the best free Christmas activities in downtown Vancouver. There's no admission cost whatsoever, and skate rentals are only $5. This might be one of the best deals in the city for a festive experience. If you're a local, you can bring your own skates and hop on the ice for free.

The rink has a wonderful community feel, and if you visit after December 13, you'll catch their special 12 Days of Christmas entertainment programming (all free).

Grab a hot cocoa from the vendors nearby ($3-5) and skate to your heart's content. Whether you're a confident skater or you're spending most of your time clutching the boards, it's a blast. When we visited, there was a diverse mix of skill levels. Some people were doing spins and skating backwards, and others were struggling to stay vertical. (It's me. I was the one struggling.) It's low pressure and just for fun, so don't worry if it's your first time on the ice.

Dates & Opening Hours:

November 28, 2025 - February 28, 2026, open 9:00am-9:00pm most days. Check the Robson Square website to confirm.

Make your way to the Vancouver Art Gallery plaza, which transforms into an absolute winter wonderland throughout December. The centrepiece? A stunning 76-foot Christmas tree that towers over the plaza, its lights reflecting off the faces of visitors who can't help but stop and stare. Viewing it is completely free.

The plaza also features a full-size Ferris wheel for those who want a bird's-eye view of the downtown lights (tickets are $7, but it's free on Tuesdays!).

But even if you skip the ride, the free experience of standing beneath that massive tree, surrounded by holiday lights and festive energy, is magical enough on its own.

3. Lights of Hope Display (Free)

At night, check out the spectacular St. Paul's Hospital Lights of Hope display. This annual tradition sees the hospital lit up with thousands of lights, creating a dazzling display visible from many points downtown. It's completely free to enjoy. If you're staying at the Sheraton Wall Centre hotel, you'll have an especially beautiful view, but the lights can be appreciated from various vantage points around the area.

This display reminds us all of the hope and community spirit that defines the season, and it's the perfect free way to wind down after a full day of festive adventures.

4. Soar with Santa at Flyover (Splurge Activity)

If you can up your budget a little and want to try something truly unique, try Flyover's Soar with Santa experience. This is one of the few splurge activities on this itinerary, but it's worth considering if you want an immersive flight simulation that takes you over the North Pole, complete with all the festive magic you'd expect.

The combination of movement, visuals, and even scents creates an experience that feels incredibly real. You'll genuinely feel like you're soaring through the winter sky. It's one of those experiences that brings out the childlike wonder in everyone, regardless of age.

I was a bit confused going into this. Is it a ride? A movie? Really, it's kind of both. You strap into a seat that's sort of like a ski-lift chair, the lights drop, and in the pitch black, the chair raises you up and brings you up into the air closer to the dome-shaped screen. When the screen starts up, you feel like you're in a 360 VR simulator. With constantly shifting visuals flying around some of Canada's most striking landscapes, and the chairs tilting and moving in sync, you will genuinely feel like you're flying over the lakes and mountains. It's a truly unique experience.

5. Vancouver Christmas Market

With your festive spirit in full swing, make your way to the Vancouver Christmas Market. This isn't a free activity, but admission can be as low as $7, and once inside, you only spend money if you choose to purchase from the vendors or grab food and drinks.

Ticket prices vary depending on the time slot you pick and the day. Weekends and the days leading up to Christmas can be closer to $25 for a ticket. Weekdays earlier in the month are cheaper. Everything inside is a bit overpriced, but it's actually not too bad for these types of spaces. The food and drinks are genuinely good, and the atmosphere is on point.

This beloved annual event brings a slice of European holiday tradition to the city, with vendors set up in charming Alpine huts selling everything from handcrafted ornaments to gourmet treats. You can absolutely enjoy the atmosphere, the decorations, and the festive vibe without spending a dime, or you can budget for a few treats if something catches your eye. You can easily get a few treats or a full meal and a drink for under $20.

Take your time wandering through the market. Sample the varied food options if your budget allows, browse the unique gift options, and don't miss the fun photo opportunities scattered throughout (all free).

We go every year, and it's always great. Weekends are quite a bit busier, which is worse for photos but better for a holiday vibe. There is almost always live music at some point in the night. One year, there was a solo pianist/singer serenading the crowds with Christmas music, and this year, there was a carolling group when we were there.

6. Coal Harbour Lights & Animals (Free)

Stick around the market until it's nice and dark and then head to the waterfront for the grand finale of your festive weekend: the Coal Harbour Lights & Animals installation. This spectacular display features over 100 beautifully glowing trees and illuminated animal light installations stretching between Canada Place and Cardero Park, and it's completely free to experience.

Walking through this display feels like stepping into an enchanted forest. The installations are creative, beautifully crafted, and incredibly photogenic. Our personal favourite was the family of bears gazing out toward Canada Place.

Take your time walking through the display. Stop for photos, admire the craftsmanship, and soak in the last of the holiday atmosphere. It's the perfect way to end your festive weekend in Downtown Vancouver without spending a cent.
