How To Get To Tofino

Getting to Tofino from Vancouver is easier than you might think, and you've got options depending on your budget, timeline, and tolerance for scenic detours. The west coast of Vancouver Island isn't exactly next door, but the journey is part of the experience, whether you're winding through old-growth forests or watching the coastline unfold from a seaplane window.

Here's the breakdown of how to actually get yourself to Tofino and what option is right for you.

The most common route is definitely just driving and taking the ferry. It's scenic, cheaper, but slower. It takes around 6 to 7 hours total.

Flying in with Harbour Air and grabbing an Evo at the dock gets you there in under an hour of flight time. Way faster, but you'll need to pack light and pay a bit more.

Option 1: Drive from Vancouver (via BC Ferries to Nanaimo)

This is the classic route. You'll take BC Ferries from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo, then drive across Vancouver Island to Tofino.

1. Book the ferry in advance

From Vancouver, you'll take BC Ferries from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo (Departure Bay). Book a vehicle spot in advance, because sailings can sell out, especially in summer and on long weekends. Plus, you get a better price if you book ahead.

2. Arrive at the terminal

With a reservation, check-in opens about 60 minutes before and closes 30 minutes before the sailing. Plan to arrive at the terminal at least 30 to 60 minutes prior so you don't lose your booking.

3. Take the ferry across

The sailing from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay is roughly 1 hour 40 minutes. There are lots of food, snack, and drink options on board, and the view the whole way is stunning. Leave your vehicle and wander around the ship. They'll call over the PA when it's time to get back in your car.

4. Drive across Vancouver Island

From Departure Bay, follow Highway 19 to Highway 4 through Parksville, then Port Alberni, then west to Tofino. The drive is 3 to 4 hours without stops. If you had the road to yourself, it would be a bit under 3 hours, but it can take longer when you're sharing the road with slower-moving industrial vehicles and big campervans.

If you are the one driving a big, slow campervan, make sure to make use of the slow-vehicle pullouts. These are spacious shoulder areas where you can safely pull over and let the faster-moving vehicles get past. So if you're growing a bit of a tail, pull over and let everyone by.

My favourite stop on the way is the Taylor River Rest Stop. It's a big parking lot by a river, and it's amazing. In the summer, the river is an amazing swim spot, and there are decent public washrooms, picnic tables, and even wifi! Really, there is free public wifi.

Its our tradition to stop here on the way in and out every year. We set up the camp stove to make some lunch, take a dip in the river, dry off in the sun, then hit the road again fully refreshed and ready to be stuck behind some big campervan that's missing all the signs about slow-moving vehicles.

5. Fuel up in Port Alberni

After Port Alberni, gas stations and EV chargers thin out. Plan for winding, wet roads on Highway 4 and drive carefully, especially in winter.

6. Total travel time

A realistic door-to-Tofino plan is around 6 to 7 hours when you add ferry check-in, sailing, and driving (and accounting for traffic). Your best bet is to let it take all day and enjoy some stops along the way.

Option 2: Fly in With Harbour Air & Grab an Evo

If you'd rather trade money for time, flying is the move.

2. Check-in timing & luggage

Harbour Air allows pets up to 35 lbs (including carrier) on flights, and the combined weight counts toward your luggage allowance. For safety, most pets travel in the rear cargo area in a hard-shelled carrier that's secure, leakproof, and well-ventilated. Soft-shell kennels aren't accepted. Maximum carrier dimensions apply.

3. Flight time

The flight is under an hour and shockingly scenic. You'll land in the harbour and be in Tofino before you'd normally even be boarding the ferry.

4. Land, get an Evo, and go

Evo Car Share has launched cars in Tofino (cars are fitted with surf and bike racks and local parking permits), so you can step off the seaplane and pick up a car right by the water. Sign up for Evo ahead of time if you plan to rent one. You can register for free and use promo code EVOPARTNER727 to get your first hour free.

5. Why pick this

With this option, you trade money for time. It's perfect if you want to maximize a short trip to Tofino or hate long drives and ferry queues.

Bonus Option: Take the Ferry by Foot and Rent a Car

If you don't have your own car, or if you're flying into Vancouver from further away, wait to pick up your rental until you're on the island. Getting to and from the ferries via public transit is easy, and foot passengers on the ferry get a much better rate. Pick up and drop off your car in Nanaimo and you'll save some money while still having wheels for the island portion of the trip.

Final Thoughts

However you get here, the journey to Tofino is worth it. Pack accordingly, leave early, and don't stress if things take a bit longer than planned. The first day of the trip is always just getting there. The real adventure starts on day 2.
