Key Tips for Visiting The Sunshine Coast
- Ferries: The ferries along the coast are actually much simpler and cheaper as a foot passenger. Just show up at least 30 minutes before your sailing and buy the ticket at the port. During peak summer weekends, you might want to show up earlier than you think, because ferries can fill up and delay you to the next sailing.
- Best Time to Visit: Summer (June through August) for warm beaches and long days; spring/fall for quieter trails and mild weather. You can go in winter and have a cozy time, but it's pretty much off-season everywhere from November to May.
- Transport: Each city has their own local buses that make it easy to hop around between all the historical sites, hikes, cafes, breweries, and shopping centres. There are also buses between each city and port. You can make it from Langdale to Lund with the transit system (it just might take a while).
- Cell Phone Reception: You should be connected in every town mentioned here. The signal can be in and out on longer stretches of highway.
- Respect Locals and First Nations: This is small-town BC and unceded land. Drive slowly, pack out garbage, and leave no trace. There are sections of highway controlled by the First Nations where the highway speeds go down to school zone speeds. It might feel odd at first, but once you spot the young kids playing, you will understand why it's important to respect the limits they set.

Location Map
All locations mentioned in this blog are pinned here so you can visualize your trip!Is It Realistic to Visit The Sunshine Coast Without a Car?
Short answer: Yes, but you'll need to be strategic about where you go and how long you stay.
The Sunshine Coast Transit System connects most major towns from Langdale to Powell River, but it runs limited schedules (especially on weekends and evenings). Some of the best hikes, hidden beaches, and remote spots are simply inaccessible without your own vehicle.
That said, if you base yourself in one or two towns and embrace a slower pace, you can have an incredible trip. Gibsons, Sechelt, and Powell River all work well as car-free bases, and you can fill days with local hikes, beach walks, and waterfront cafés without feeling limited.
Best for: Travellers who prefer depth over breadth, don't mind planning around bus schedules, and want to experience the Sunshine Coast's laid-back culture firsthand.
Not ideal for: People who want to hit every destination on the coast or explore multiple remote hikes in a week.
Getting to the Sunshine Coast From Vancouver
To reach the Sunshine Coast from Vancouver you will need to take a ferry from Horseshoe Bay. You can reach Horseshoe Bay from downtown Vancouver via TransLink Bus #250 or #257 from downtown Vancouver.
Total transit time: About 2 hours from downtown Vancouver to Langdale

Getting Around The Sunshine Coast With Transit
Where are you trying to go?
Planning your transit routes depends a lot on what you want to prioritize during your trip. Do you want to hike? Camp? Stick to the main towns?
If you're not familiar with the Sunshine Coast, read over our in-depth itinerary first to decide your top destinations.

Once you know where you want to go, let's figure out how to get there.
The Sunshine Coast Transit System
The Sunshine Coast Transit System is surprisingly comprehensive but runs on a limited schedule. If you're focused on the first stretch of the Sunshine Coast (i.e you're not planning on taking the second ferry to the Powell River Area), the SCTS has you covered from Langdale to Gibsons to Roberts Creek to Sechelt to Halfmoon Bay. And that's already a pretty sweet trip! If you want to get to the northern half of the coast, you will need to book onto the connector (more on that in the next section).

Powell River Transit Fares

- Children under 12 ride free
If you don't want to pay with cash, you can set up a reloadable Umo card. You can pick one up at the Powell River City Hall (6910 Duncan Street).
Water Taxis and Boat Access
Some of the Sunshine Coast's best destinations are only accessible by boat, but that doesn't mean you need your own vessel.
Savary Island
- Water taxi from Lund (Lund Water Taxi)
- 5-minute crossing, multiple daily departures
- $20–30 round-trip per person
- Bike rentals available on the island (highly recommended)
Princess Louisa Inlet
- Tour from Egmont (Egmont Adventure Centre or private charters)
- Full-day zodiac tours
- One of BC's most stunning fjords, only accessible by boat
Bringing a Bike to The Sunshine Coast
Bringing a bike is a great option. Take the bus between destinations and then have your own two wheels to get you between beaches, breweries, and cafes. There is no fee for bringing a bike with you as a walk-on passenger on the BC ferries, and all the buses that are a part of the SCTS come with bike racks. Be warned, though, most buses can only accommodate 2 bikes at a time, and there is no guarantee there will be space for yours. Usually, you can just wait for the next bus, but it's a risk.
Here are a few other stipulations made by the SCTS:
- Saddlebags, antennas, child carriers or any other items that interfere with the driver’s vision must be removed.
- Bicycles on the bike rack must not interfere with any device on the bus (e.g. windshield wipers).
- Bike racks on community buses can only be used during daylight hours, as bikes block the headlights. All other BC Transit buses have no time-of-day restrictions.
- Folding bicycles are allowed onboard the bus if they are in a case and small enough not to obstruct the aisle.
- Electric scooters are allowed on board if they can be folded and stored between the seats or held.
- Electric bicycles are only allowed on the bike rack when they weigh less than 25kg (55 lb.) and the battery (lithium only) is removed from the bike and brought on board the bus with the customer.
- Electric bikes with non-lithium batteries, as well as scooter-style electric bikes (moped style), are not permitted on bike racks or onboard the bus.
You can also bring your bike on the Sunshine Coast Connector, but they charge $20 per bike.

- Download transit schedules before you go: Cell service is patchy on the coast
- Pack light: You'll be walking and biking more than you expect
- Build in buffer time: Buses don't run frequently, so missing one can cost you hours
- Hitchhiking is common: The Sunshine Coast has a strong hitchhiking culture, especially between Powell River and Lund
- Bring cash: Some small businesses and water taxis don't take cards
- Stay longer in fewer places: Deep travel beats rushing between towns
- Check ferry schedules: Missing the last ferry to or from Earls Cove/Saltery Bay can derail your plans
What You'll Miss Without a Car
Let's be honest: some experiences are just harder (or impossible) without your own vehicle:
- Skookumchuck Rapids: Trailhead is a 10 km bike ride from Egmont
- Smuggler Cove: Accessible by bus to Halfmoon Bay, then a 45-minute walk to the trailhead
- Thormanby Island: Need a car to reach Secret Cove Marina
- Tin Hat Hut: Remote trailhead, no transit access
- Spontaneous detours and hidden beaches
- Camping at remote rec sites
If these are must-dos, consider renting a car for part of your trip or joining a tour.

Final Thoughts
Exploring the Sunshine Coast without a car is absolutely doable, and it can even enhance your experience. You'll slow down, meet more locals (hitchhiking and bus rides are great for conversations), and spend more time in fewer places, which is exactly the pace the Sunshine Coast deserves.
The key is managing expectations. You won't get to every waterfall and hidden cove, but you'll still experience the best of what makes this place special: the beaches, the breweries, the trails, and the unmistakable laid-back vibe.
Pack light, plan ahead, and embrace the island time. The Sunshine Coast will reward you for it.
