Where to Stay on the Sunshine Coast, BC (2026 Guide)

The Sunshine Coast offers a diverse range of accommodations, from beachside retreats to mountain lodges. Whether you're traveling by car or relying on public transit, this guide will help you find the perfect place to stay in each community along this stunning stretch of British Columbia coastline.

My personal favourite way to road trip the Sunshine Coast is lots of short stays all the way up and then just driving back down in one day. You can do a great mix of camping, hotel stays, unique accommodations, and some great glamping opportunities. The variety is fun in my opinion, but if you're looking for standard accommodations the whole way through, the coast works great for that too and we've compiled all the best priced and best rated options here.

Where you want to stay will depend on 2 things. What you want to do during your trip and how you're getting around.

If you're relying on transit, I would suggest spending a few nights in Gibsons, a few Nights in Sechelt, and a few nights in Powell River. This way, you can use each of these 3 spots as a base to do day trips to hikes, smaller towns, and more remote beaches.

If you're not worried about doing every hike or visiting all of the beaches and you just want a nice little vacation on the coast, I would suggest basing yourself in Sechelt. This is the most central city for this type of trip, regardless of whether you're driving or relying on transit.

And if you ARE a completionist like us, you might want to consider moving quickly and staying in multiple spots along the coast, mixing it up between high-end luxury stays, backcountry camping, and staying at unique cabins or glamping pods.

Regardless of your travel style, this guide will help you understand all of your best accommodation options along the coast from Langdale to Lund!

Final Thoughts

The Sunshine Coast really does have something for everyone when it comes to accommodations. Whether you're looking to splurge on a beachfront B&B with a perfect 10.0 rating, camp under the stars near the Skookumchuck Rapids, or stay in a geodesic dome overlooking Pender Harbour, you'll find options that fit your style and budget.

The key to planning your stay is thinking about how you're getting around and what you want to prioritize. If you're relying on transit, stick to the main hubs like Gibsons, Sechelt, and Powell River, where you'll have easy access to amenities and day trip opportunities. If you've got a car, you can spread out and experience the unique character of each community.

My personal recommendation? Mix it up. Start with a couple of nights in a nice hotel to settle in, throw in a night or two of camping or glamping for the experience, and maybe splurge on one really special stay at a place like The Tuwanek Bed and Breakfast or Painted Boat Resort. The variety makes the trip more memorable, and half the fun of the Sunshine Coast is discovering these hidden gem accommodations tucked away in quiet harbours and forest clearings.

Most importantly, book ahead if you're visiting in summer. Those high-rated properties fill up fast, especially on weekends and holidays. A lot of these great stays can only accommodate a small number of people, so it's easy for them to book out for an entire season. But if you're flexible with your dates and willing to explore shoulder season, you'll find great deals and have some of these stunning spots almost to yourself.

Happy planning, and enjoy your time on the Sunshine Coast!

FAQ

How do I get to the Sunshine Coast?
The Sunshine Coast is accessible via BC Ferries from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver to Langdale (about 40 minutes). If you're continuing north, you'll take a second ferry from Earls Cove to Saltery Bay to reach Powell River and beyond.
Can I explore the Sunshine Coast without a car?
Yes! The Sunshine Coast Connector provides transit service connecting major communities. However, having a vehicle gives you more flexibility to explore remote beaches, hiking trails, and smaller towns. If relying on transit, base yourself in Gibsons, Sechelt, or Powell River and plan day trips from there.
Do I need to book ferry reservations in advance?
During peak summer months and holiday weekends, ferry reservations are highly recommended. You can travel as a foot passenger without reservations, but vehicle space can fill up quickly.
How long should I spend on the Sunshine Coast?
For a relaxed experience hitting the main highlights, plan for 3-5 days. If you want to explore thoroughly with multiple stops, hiking, and beach time, a week or more is ideal. Weekend getaways work well if you're just visiting one area like Sechelt or Gibsons.
What's the best area to stay in if I only have time for one location?
Sechelt is the most central location and offers the best balance of amenities, beach access, and proximity to attractions. It works well whether you have a vehicle or are using transit.
Should I stay in one place or move around?
This depends on your travel style. Staying in one central location (like Sechelt) keeps things simple and reduces packing and unpacking. Moving between communities lets you experience different vibes and puts you closer to specific attractions, but requires more planning and time.
What types of accommodations are available?
The Sunshine Coast offers hotels, B&Bs, waterfront suites, luxury resorts, glamping pods, camping, and unique stays like geodesic domes. You'll find everything from budget-friendly campgrounds to high-end spa resorts.
Are there pet-friendly accommodations?
Yes, several accommodations welcome pets, though fees typically apply. Always check the specific property's pet policy and any restrictions before booking.
Do most accommodations have kitchens?
Many accommodations include full kitchens or kitchenettes, especially suites and vacation rentals. This is great for saving money on meals and preparing fresh local seafood or farmers market finds.
Is parking included at most places?
Most accommodations offer free on-site parking, which is particularly important in areas like Gibsons where street parking can be limited near the waterfront.
Why does it matter where I stay in Gibsons?
Gibsons is built on a steep hill. If you're without a vehicle, stay near the waterfront at the bottom of the hill for easy walking access to shops, restaurants, and beaches. With a car, you can stay at the top of the hill (Upper Gibsons) near local amenities.
What's special about Pender Harbour and Madeira Park?
Pender Harbour is known for its stunning natural beauty, excellent boating and fishing, and the nearby Skookumchuck Rapids. It has a more remote, peaceful feel while still offering quality accommodations and services.
Is Egmont worth staying in?
If you want to visit the Skookumchuck Rapids or prefer a wilderness experience, staying in Egmont puts you right at the gateway to these attractions. It's more remote with fewer services, so it's best for nature-focused travelers.
When is the best time to visit the Sunshine Coast?
Summer (June-September) offers the warmest weather and best beach conditions, but it's also the busiest season. Spring and fall provide milder weather with fewer crowds. Winter is quietest and rainiest but can be beautiful for storm watching and cozy getaways.
Do I need to book accommodations far in advance?
For summer weekends and holidays, book as early as possible—popular properties can fill up months ahead. Shoulder seasons and weekdays offer more flexibility, though it's still wise to book at least a few weeks in advance.
What are the must-see attractions?
Top highlights include the Skookumchuck Rapids, beaches like Porpoise Bay and Davis Bay, the Sunshine Coast Trail, kayaking in Pender Harbour, and exploring the charming downtown areas of Gibsons and Sechelt.
Are there good hiking options from these towns?
Yes! Each area offers hiking access. Gibsons has trails at Soames Hill and Cliff Gilker Park, Sechelt is near the Sunshine Coast Trail and Smuggler Cove, while Egmont provides access to the Skookumchuck Narrows trail.
Can I see marine wildlife?
Absolutely. The Sunshine Coast offers excellent opportunities to spot orcas, seals, sea lions, otters, and various seabirds. Pender Harbour and the Earls Cove area are particularly good for marine wildlife viewing.
